Getting lift depth right the first time

Deep enough that the boat floats over the lowered rack at the season’s lowest water — not install day’s. Placement by hull type, why the spring level lies, and recording the spot so next year isn’t a fresh argument.

How deep should a boat lift sit? Deep enough that the boat floats freely over the fully lowered rack with clearance to spare — at the lowest water the lake will see that season, not the water you’re standing in on install day. That second half is the whole trick, and it’s the difference between setting a lift once and moving it twice.

Spring water lies. On most lakes, install-day water is the year’s high — snowmelt and spring rain, sometimes a foot or more above the late-summer line, more on lakes with a managed drawdown. A lift set with comfortable clearance in early May can have a pontoon scraping its rack by August, and the relocation call that follows is work you do at your own expense with a customer wondering why it wasn’t right the first time.

The arithmetic, once

The depth a lift needs is a sum, not a guess: the boat’s draft while running (motor down, loaded), plus the height of the rack when fully lowered, plus honest margin for the summer’s water drop and wave slop. Every term is knowable. The draft is in the boat’s spec sheet, the lowered-rack height is in the lift manufacturer’s chart, and the water drop is your lake’s own habit — which the customer with thirty summers on that shoreline can usually recite to the inch.

Hull by hull

  • Pontoons are forgiving — shallow draft, tubes that don’t mind a close rack. They tolerate the thinnest water of anything you’ll set, which is why they’re the boat most often parked on the marginal end of a shoreline.
  • Outboard and sterndrive V-hulls need meaningfully more: the hull sits deeper, and the lowered motor is the part everyone forgets until it finds the rack. Figure from the deepest point of the running gear, not the keel.
  • Inboards are the strict case — fixed running gear below the hull that doesn’t tilt up out of trouble. Generous clearance, no rounding down, and if the shoreline can’t honestly provide it, say so at the walkthrough rather than at the August phone call.

In every case, the manufacturer’s depth chart for the specific lift beats any rule of thumb — capacities and rack heights differ more between models than operators expect. The rules above tell you what to look up; the chart gives the number.

Slope, and the front-to-back cheat

Lake bottoms slope, so a lift rarely sits in one depth — the outer end is in deeper water than the shore end, and a lift leveled on that slope splits the difference. That’s the honest extra margin on most sites: nose the boat’s deep gear toward the deep end. Soft bottoms deserve a second look too — pads or timbers under the legs on muck, because a lift that settles two inches by July gave away margin you thought you had.

Ask where the water’s going, not where it is

Before setting anything on an unfamiliar lake, ask the two questions that decide everything: how far does this lake drop by Labor Day, and does anyone control it? Natural lakes have habits; dam-controlled lakes have policies, and a scheduled fall drawdown is public information. The spring level plus the summer drop is the real number you’re setting against. The customer’s dock neighbor knows it even when the customer doesn’t.

Record the spot so next year isn’t a fresh argument

The crew that finally gets a lift sitting right — depth, slope, the pontoon centered — has produced something worth keeping: the answer. Where that lift goes is a fact about that shoreline now, and it shouldn’t live in one crew member’s memory over the winter.

Some years the lake outruns the margin — a drought summer, a drawdown moved early — and lifts need relocating no matter how well they were set. That’s a service, priced like one, not a favor absorbed in goodwill. The shops that set lifts against the honest low, record where and why, and charge fairly for the moves the lake forces are the ones for whom lift depth is a solved problem instead of an annual season of callbacks.
